    Fall is on its way

Sunday, September 7, 2008, 11:12 PM EST [General]

So, we made it through the Summer. We did well at Sterling Ren Faire but the 2 weekends in a row were too much for my mother's equilibrium. She got tired quickly and it would shake her up when she would get tired and confused her words while trying to wait on people.

The Downeast Pirate faire was fun, even if there were no patrons (well, alot fewer than last year).  We are down to our last 2 faires - a one day medieval faire next week and the Salem Pirate faire the weekend after that.

To help with the bills, I have taken a full time position. It is the only way I know of to pay the bills for both my home and the business right now. Mom is glad to see the season end so that she does not feel so pressured to sew for shows. But yet, she is upset because I do not have more shows scheduled and I am going to be working for someone other than Shire Attire.  She and my brother are upset with me. They think I am giving up on the shop, where in reality, I am trying to make sure I don't have to close the business and file bankruptcy!!!

On a brighter note, my daughter has been talking with her riding instructor at JWU during the summer. He has offered his reccommendation to anyone who would be willing to give her another chance at riding internationally next year. And recently, he asked her if she would consider going to Germany with him next Summer.  Naturally, she said YES! When she told me that this weekend, I told her to get her passport ASAP!

I got to see my best friend recently. He came to KRF in Carver, MA just before the Labor Day weekend opening. He works for the Hanlon-Lees joust troupe and I have not seen him in 2 years. It was good to hug him again. We sat and talked as we always do. It felt good to just sit with him again. But he did tell me that he will probably not come back to Carver next year. Since I am now working weekends, I will probably not get to see him again this year and if he does not return next year, who knows when I will see him next. After losing my girlfriend a year and a half ago to a cerebral hemmorage, Wolf has become the only person I seem to have long talks with anymore.  We call each other at least once a month. I will miss sitting and talking to him face to face.

So, I will get into winter sewing mode soon. I have some garb requests for my family that I will be doing as Xmas gifts. Then I need to work on stock for next year.

Have a good end of Faire Season all!

    Updates are good

Tuesday, June 24, 2008, 09:31 PM EST [General]

So, here we are,  month after my last blog. My daughter is on the mend. We were VERY successful at the Long Island Pirate Faire. Life is returning to normal.

But there have been some side effects to last month's happenings.

    1) The SOB who hit my daughter still has his license to drive in the state of CT. I was told by the guy at the body shop that a week after the accident, he was released from the psyciatric ward to his mother. Mommy, bought him a motor cycle and now he is back in the hospital with 2 broken legs. I have resisted the urge to send a pot of poison ivy to his room!

    2) After I wrote that last blog, my daughter received an email offering her the chance of a lifetime! She was sent an offer to go to Ireland and ride in international competition! Unfortunately, it was determined by her chiropractor 2 days later, that she pulled (possibly ripped) a shoulder muscle and was ordered to not ride for at least the next 6 weeks. This is to prevent a more serious injury that could result in never being able to compete again.

But dispite all this, we continue. We are preparing to go to Sterling. My Mom is buzzing and fussing to get things done. She is so excited, she gets her mords wixed when talking about it. But she is more normal now than before the news that we were going. Her thoughts are clear even if her words aren't. This is good therapy for her!

So, I hope to see you all at Sterling. May you be there in spirit if you can not afford the gas!

    And the Beat(ings) go on...

Sunday, May 25, 2008, 09:48 PM EST [General]

Let me start with, she is alive and well. SORE, brused, but alive and well. She keeps asking how she didn't die in this one. The window was shattered all over her and it took prying the door open to get her out. The driverside door is concave and was pushed against her leg but did not do major harm. Although the seatbelt kept her from going through the windshield, her bruse across her body will remind her to wear it ALWAYS!

On her way to RI, on the night of May 24, to assist me and her grandmother at the Newport Pirate Festival, my daughter was sideswiped by a hit and run driver who was in a high speed chase with a CT State Police Officer. They did catch the SOB and I can assure you that he will not be driving for a VERY LONG time.  We spent the night at the hospital in Putnam, CT until 4 am. As a result, we had to cancel taking Shire Attire to the festival which was suppose to be the start of our season.

I am hoping that this does not foreshadow this entire season for us. We have worked past my mother's stroke and now this. I have had some medical tests as well but those results will not be in until next week. Nothing dire there, just something that can improve my well being if I can get some things under control.

Hope to see folks at the LI Pirate Fest - if the powers that be allow it.

And the beat goes on, and the beat goes on...

    Parents Just Gotta Brag

Friday, May 9, 2008, 08:16 PM EST [General]

Michael and Diane Martell are proud to announce that their daughter, Jeannine K. Martell (Kari) will be successfully completing her Batchelor's degree at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI upon completion of her autumn trimester in November.  Kari will be graduating Suma Cum Laude with her degree in Equine Business Management with an Equine Law specialization.

Kari is an outstanding horsewoman with extensive experience in barn work, horsemanship, veterinary experience and riding excellence. She is currently seeking employment in the NY/CT area. Her scores for in-hand work and FEI riding would make her a valuable show person for the right barn. Her love of Renaissance Faires, experience as a squire, ability to ride as a knight or teach others to joust and her equine degree (remember, Business Management), she could seriously enhance any joust team.

So, her immensely proud, and now poor, parents would love to see their brilliant child working in the field for which we paid so much for her to become a part. Serious inquiries can email me with information to pass on to her. All others can just leave their acknowledgements for me to gloat over at my leisure.

So, I got this email today...

Monday, May 5, 2008, 09:53 PM EST [General]

IT is the REAL THING! I have to say that my husband and I got a GREAT laugh out of this!

If you decide to take this offer, I get the $1000 kickback! I can't take this because there are no kids at home to make us eligible. (We just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary! The kid better be older than 17!)Thanks, but I do not care to adopt your child just to qualify! Guys, just a warning: Do not apply for this unless you are sure your wife will be willing to come home after the filming is over!!!!! Have fun!
